The Awaken the Learner program aims to promote safe and positive school climates, and reduce bullying and violence through fostering kindness, connection and respect among students. Awaken the Learner is part of Rachel’s Challenge, an organization founded by Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Joy Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Fueled by stories of Rachel’s many acts of compassion and kindness remembered by her peers and family, this program sets out to inspire and support the development of compassion, forgiveness, and taking action. Issues such as isolation, prejudice and bullying are also addressed.

There are differentiated programs for elementary schools, middle/high schools, K-8, as well as a suite of professional development workshops for school staff.
